Media can extend to a personal hygiene product, the sanitary napkin
Communicating
to young people about menstruation and its management is important
as it has a direct bearing on health.
Sanitary Napkin
Developed during the MacArthur FLD Fellowship Project: 2002.
It is common practice to use old cotton fabric preferably of a dark colour. The belief is that it is unclean blood, so any thing will do to absorb the flow. The sanitary napkin that was developed used light coloured cloth for the upper layer!
The design was made simple so it could be stitched easily, with all locally available material. It looked at factors like comfort, practicality and reusability.
A cardboard doll wearing the napkin was developed as a demonstration model, so that the girls could understand how the sanitary napkin is worn. The doll wears a napkin under her ghagra (skirt).
